2002/9/25 CMT Evening

The Concert took place at the Hong Kong Coliseum and would be on-screen by TVB Jade on Oct 6.

Leon started rehearsal at the venue around 4:45pm till 5:50pm, he arrived in pretty good mood and waved to fans when he left --- a couple of cough though. Around 8:00pm, Leon returned the venue and was found driven his brand new limo by himself.

Most of the tickets were distributed by the sponsor, CMT (a property developer in Shenzhen) to their value customers and staff, and other tickets were allocated among fan clubs by TVB. Emcee, Ah Lek began the show with a song and joined in by all guest artists and later followed by other two emcees who introduced the first performer of the evening. Amid the audience, the banners and glowing sticks identified fans were being seated, it was obviously that most of the fans of other artists were organized to sit beyond row 15-20th of the venue except Leon fans who were high and above row 20th. The webmaster was lucky enough to get a seat at 2nd row and overheard a guest quering : "Why Leon fans were sitting so far away from the stage?" (Webmaster’s view: Could the promotion team of Sony do something about it!)

Great! Leon was the first one to perform. He was on stage wearing a stylist white tee and a pair of black pants. He delivered his first song "BaBa" which was accompanied by a group of dancers and flickering fireworks around him -- poor Leon, I hope the fireworks wouldn’t cause any trouble to his nostril. After giving some lines to the audience, he went on with his last song "Got to Know How to Deceive Oneself", off he went with the descending platform where he stood.

Around 9:00pm, Leon made his way out from the backstage and waved goodbye to his fans outside the coliseum. He got on to his limo and be the chauffeur again. On his way out to the car park, Chi Chuen alighted the vehicle and received bouquets from fans. The limo was then buzzed away from the mobbed fans.

19.9.02 LAUNCHING OF WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY Nov 20,2002

The official starting time was 2:30pm. The children arrived at about 2:10pm and the ceremony didn’t start until 2:40pm. McDonald’s Restaurants (HK) Ltd., Hong Kong Committee For UNICEF and Ronald McDonald House Charities of HK then kicked off a series of fundraising activities at Times Square Open Piazza, targeted at raising over HK $1 million to benefit children worldwide.

The kindergarten children lined up on stage and sang a song to welcome the guests. Madam Chai Suk Mui was the voluntary MC. Mr. James Ip, Managing Director of McDonald’s Restaurants (HK) was the first host to present his speech. He said that to coincide with the anniversary of the UN adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on Nov 20, 1989, McDonald’s designated Nov 20, 2002 as World Children’s Day at McDonald’s. McDonald’s in 121 countries will participate in the ‘ Love For Our Future’ theme to raise funds to benefit children throughout the world. He thanked Leon twice in his speech for Leon’s participation.

Then Dr. Robert H.P. Fung, Chairman for HK Committee for UNICEF made his speech. He briefly retold the establishment of UNICEF in HK and he also thanked Leon.

Mr. Fung’s speech was followed by the speech of Professor Patrick Yuen, Director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of HK. He briefed the public of the charities’ service to the seriously sick children, usually cancer patients. (I didn’t remember him thanking Leon.)

Before Leon, whom Chai termed as a ‘very important person’, appeared on stage, she detailed Leon’s past service in UNICEF. She also joked that Leon meant the equivalent of clapping. Fans said that they did yelled Leon’s name, but the crowd was small and near the street, so I only heard clapping in the middle. Leon’s service to UNICEF was printed in a fact sheet for the press. This is copied in its entirety after this report.
Leon wore a pair of light tan sunglasses, a light blue Addidas tracksuit jacket, a red McDonald’s official T-shirt and a pair of jeans for the day. He smiled and thanked everybody for supporting the event. There is a postcard design competition by children. Chai asked Leon to guess the age group for the junior league. Leon guessed 3-6. The correct answer was 5-8. Leon guessed the senior’s league age group was from 9-16, but it should be from 9-12. Leon said a 3 year-old could paint with a 5 year-old, grapping his/her hand. The most important thing is to have a charitable heart. (Hay, I guess you have to be smart to be his kid!)

Leon then explained why his postcard for fundraising is a photo of a group of smiling Brazilian children with him in the middle. He said that when he visited Brazil, he was impressed by the smiles of the children despite their poor living conditions. He liked to spread this kind of attitude.

Leon was invited to officially mail the postcard after he signed it. Chai chided to see how old Leon’s writing and signature looked liked. Leon said all the words written by someone who’s writing looked above two years old were by him. Chai praised Leon’s writing to be spirited.

Leon asked the media to take more photos for the photo competition today. He also invited the 5-12 year olds to enter the postcard design competition. He reminded the public to buy McDonald’s food on Nov 20. Chai said he got a good memory, she was afraid he would forget a point or two. Leon retorted that he could remember everything, speak quickly and people could hear what he said. This was why UNICEF picked him to be their spokesman.

Chai then invited all the hosts and Uncle McDonald back for the Hung Ming Lantern raising ceremony. They each wrote their wish on a postcard and then stuck their card on the lantern. Leon’s wish was that the world’s children could have the opportunity to receive an education. (A fan snatched that postcard and keep it for his own after the ceremony and the handwriting in the back is far better than the printed words on the postcard.) 5 guests from Ronald McDonald House then came on stage to tell the audience their wishes. Leon was the first to clap when he saw a girl with hand braces struggling to walk up the stairs. These children all wished to be well soon. A boy named Dragon hoped Leon would stand beside him and sing Charged Up. Leon did walk across the stage to stand by him but he laughed that they would ‘Charged up’ later when Dragon recovered. Leon when asked to say something more, he said that everyone had their own wish and these wishes would be supported by one’s own effort and a well-run society’s care. The lantern was raised and Chai wished that the charity donations would be higher and higher like the lantern raising. Leon then presented gifts and shook hands with each patient.

Something special happened during the group photos. Leon was probably hot and he flipped his T-shirt thus showing his tummy and belly button twice. (I thought that was cute.) Leon thanked the crowd and shook hands with everyone on stage, including Uncle McDonald and Chai and thanked everyone present before he left.

When he left the car park, he raised his hand over the sunroof and waved to the 40 odd fans lining on the pavement. The time was about 3:40pm.

2002/9/1 Metro Broadcast Celebration Evening

Leon was invited as one of the guest artists to perform at this evening’s concert celebrating Metro Broadcast’s anniversary. The show was sponsored by a health product, hands on value-back tickets were given to fans who made a purchase of $100-odd or more worth of the product. Leon fans appeared to have converged at part of the VIP areas at section I & II of the concert hall, also at the front and middle seats of the other sections, III, IV & V. (Spotted : Juno got quite a number of fans comparing with other new singers).

Before the official opening of the concert, the audience was entertained by the performance of a group of new singers at around 8:00pm then followed by the official address of Metro’s director Mr. Kam accompanied by the sponsors’ representatives and Ms Sally Yeh to marked the celebration opening. Around 8:45pm, when the emcees introduced Leon, fans had no hesitation in lighting up their glowing sticks and signs of various sharps and sizes of which the effect was stunning. Leon appeared on stage with a white suit and white shirt with a strip in burgundy shade along the collar (which is the same style as the one in the JSG tv show), and a pair of light-glare sunglasses.

Leon started with a fast number, but not BA BA, the lyric was about "the responsibilities of women" maybe we all ladies should seriously take note of the lyrics of this song later! The stage of this Convention Hall 3 was particularly wide, Leon was moving to and fro the stage and waved to fans in front of him. After greeted Happy Birthday to Metro Radio, he went on with another song, he said with an embarrassed smile "You'd Better Go". (Webmaster: From the laughter given out by the audience last evening, Leon was aware that he had better introduce this song in a right tone!) Before the intro, two fans rushed towards him with bouquets and were then well-received by Leon.

Leon’s vocal was perfect which made the LIVE version of "You'd Better Go" a superb performance. While he was singing, he took a glance at the sea of red luminous lights among the audience. Before he left, he collected the bouquets and two more fans offering him bouquets and he was pleased to receive them.

Close to 9:00pm, Leon was driven out of the car park in his van whereby all the fans have left the concert hall and waited at the spot. Once the van was approaching, they yelled out "Leon". Leon was happy to switch on the light and waved to them. Since the van was being mobbed by fans eagerly waving back to Leon, Ah B had to slow down the car all the way…(good that Leon hired a good driver!) Fans were still moving along with the van until reaching the traffic light and let go Leon.
